Today we are looking at the weird, the wacky, the crazy, the most outside the norm Broncos ever built, in no particular order.
The New Old Bronco
The team at Classic Broncos melded the body panels from a classic Bronco onto a new Bronco chassis, this is the result:
Hog Machine Monster Bronco
In the mid 1980s the Monster Truck craze was in full lunatic mode, every day, it seemed, a new monster truck would emerge from some corner of the U.S.. It was only a matter of time before someone built a Classic Bronco into a monster truck. Originally this Bronco was equipped with tractor tires in the 5ft tall neighborhood.
The owner wanted to crush cars and despite the Bronco having a 92-inch wheelbase, the owner decided to install, not the 66" Terra tires (which was pretty much standard) but instead the 72" Terra tires. That meant the tires were only 20" +/- apart from one another.
Dune Duster/Wildflower
This next Bronco was an Early Budd bodied Bronco that was customized before the public could even buy a Bronco. In 1965 Ford send a U13 Roadster to custom car builders Sam and George Barris of Hollywood, CA. Known as the Dune Duster the Bronco toured the car show circuits for a few years.Then circa 1969/1970 the Bronco was repainted and renamed Wildflower (don't judge, it was a different time). The whereabouts of this Bronco are currently unknown.
The Monster Garage Bronco
Certainly not the first rock crawler/buggy built from a Bronco, but it may be the most famous.
The TV show crew took an un-cut, stock 1968 U15 Wagon and built it into an ugly yet very capable crawler.
The Bronco Woody
Built much like the Ford Woody Wagons from the '30s-'50's, this 1974 Bronco U-15 Sport wagon was given the full woody treatment inside and out.
The owner converted this 1966 Bronco to 2WD, then added a 292 cubic inch Y-block Ford V-8 with a supercharger, and check out the custom paint....
Big Oly Bronco
Big Oly is next, which isn't even a Bronco, see the pictures and you will understand.
It started with a tube frame and didn't have a front drive axle.
James Duff's Pony ExpressIt started out as a former work truck, a '66 U14 1/2 cab that Duff bought from a construction company in San Diego.
Duff built the Bronco for running the dunes at Pismo beach, a hopped-up V-8 engine was the least weird modification. Duff was a body/fender man, meaning he straightened dents and painted cars. He applied some of the custom car mods to the Bronco's body. He channeled the body and tapered the front. You can see how the grill is so truncated that the headlights barely clear the front bumper. He customized his famous "hood bubble" to make clearance for the air cleaner, then added roll bars inside and out. He topped it off with a custom paint job.
Pony Another odd ball was the Pony Bronco, it started life as a concept for a 2wd buggy kit, similar to the Myer's Manx (that uses a VW Beetle chassis).
The front suspension was a narrowed twin I beam from a Ford F-100 2wd truck.The concept was scrapped, and the chassis (sans body) was sent to Bill Stroppe's shop in Long Beach, CA. Parnelli Jones convinced him to build it into a 2wd race vehicle to race in Baja.
A fiberglass body was added, channeled it so it sat low on the frame. Then they took it racing, in 1970 it won both the Mint 400 and the Baja 500. Most importantly, it put the wheels in motion for the construction of the Big Oly Bronco.
Here are some others worth mentioning.
Another Monster Bronco, this one runs street legal Michelin military tires (52" tall I believe)
Check this one out: Uncut rear fenders, a custom chrome grill, side pipes and fuel injection stacks. Looks like it could have been built by Barris in the 60's
