Bronco Cryptozoology #7: Sportsman Special Broncos

Cryptozoology is the study of mythical creatures that may or may not exist.

This applies to Broncos how? Well, there is a lot of mystery and myths surrounding certain Bronco models and specialty-built Broncos.

So, this new segment at the blog will focus on these prototypes, one of a kind, special editions and the most historical Broncos ever built.

To keep the posts short, we will include only a brief story of each

We will try to separate fact from fiction and possibly come up with more questions than answers.

At first, I was going to compile this into one post, but it got waaay too long.

In 1968 the Ford Dealers in Colorado were getting crafty. They had worked a deal with Ford to produce a "High Country" special edition Mustang, basically a paint and trim package.

They also worked a deal for Ford to make a special edition Bronco called the "Sportsman Special". They were Sport Broncos with unique paint colors (boulder bronze, sky blue and mountain green), gun racks, roof racks and special brass fender badges.

The Rocky Mountain Sportsman Special was made in 1968 thru 1970, the 69 & 70 models had the year on the badge above the word special.
Also they may have added additional color options as we have found several Bronco wearing the Sportsman Special badging and wearing different paint that the three original colors.

and yes, this was a real regional model. It us unknown how many were made, the Broncos were ordered by the Colorado Ford dealers, then modified at the dealership.
