Famous Broncos part 2

This is part two of this series, if you missed part one, you can see it here

The first Bronco we will look at today is the Balloon Chaser Ambulance. In 1977 Ford sponsored a man name Karl Thomas who was attempting to set a record hot air transcontinental balloon flight. Ford had Stroppe design the chase vehicles, which included three Ford Econoline vans, three F-100 Stepside 2wd pickups and Two Broncos, one of which was set-up as an ambulance...you know just in case.

The actual work was performed by a company called R.V.I. (Recreation Vehicles Incorporated), they were experienced in custom vans (it was the 70's remember..). All the vehicles were painted with a matching colors and stripes.

I have seen the Balloon Chase Ambulance in person, it was once owned by James Duff, he showed it off at a few events while he owned it. Here is a picture of him in Sequim at a Bronco gathering in a field next to his shop
The Ambulance also played a small part in the movie Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, which is about the 1971 Mint 400 Desert Race.......which is 6 years before the Ambulance rolled off of Ford's assembly line...

The other matching (non-ambulance) Bronco is still in circulation.
The new owner of the Ambulance has also purchased one of the pick-ups and is in the process of restoring it.

The next Bronco is famous for being built as a project vehicle on the TV show Trucks! Hosted by Stacey David, this '66 half cab was in poor shape when he started....as per his usual style he chose a loud color and garish graphics....then named it "Crazy Horse". You can still catch reruns of the show on cable. The Bronco was sold on ebay this past February for $27,700

This next Bronco was also a project vehicle. Built by Icon in Los Angeles, the "re-imagined" what the Classic Bronco might look like if built today. They are selling these.....if you can afford them, but like a lot of things, if you have to ask how much, you probably can't afford one.

This next Bronco appeared in the popular silver screen adaptation of the TV show Charlie's Angels. Bill Murray played the part of Bosley and got to drive this Classic Bronco
